Hands-on intro to critical data studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice
→ Never more than now, with the rise of AI and the deluge of fake news, have we needed the skills to critically assess information. But can we pick them without getting our hands dirty and diving deeper into the subtleties of algorithms and databases?
A critical understanding of today’s network culture requires a fundamental knowledge of the tools and processes that govern our digitized life – from the information policy of search engines, through databases that collect massive amounts of data, to visual narratives guiding our attention.
Hands-on exercises in data acquisition and processing complemented by critical data studies will allow students to better understand the algorithmization of culture and society. The skills acquired during the classes will facilitate everyday research and analysis of information and help create meaningful data-driven messages.
